What I’m Reading Now – I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream and The Human Use of Human Beings

I finished reading The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster. Although it was first published in 1909, it is frighteningly relevant today and a highly recommended read. Life is run by ‘The Machine’ – and anyone who disagrees with it or tries to find out more about life before it existed is forced into becoming ‘Homeless’ which ends in death. Everything is at your fingertips, no need to venture out into the world or see other people – not even your own children. Mayhem ensues when it breaks down… It’s a fairly quick read, thought provoking and I hope I didn’t give too much plot away. Here’s my favourite quote:

“Beware of first-hand ideas!” exclaimed one of the most advanced of them. “First-hand ideas do not really exist. They are but the physical impressions produced by life and fear, and on this gross foundation who could erect a philosophy? Let your ideas be second-hand, and if possible tenth-hand, for then they will be far removed from that disturbing element – direct observation.”

I’m reading I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison. It’s another Sci-Fi short story. If you’d like to take a look you can preview it here:

I’m also reading The Human Use of Human Beings by Norbert Wiener. It’s a textbook, so good to read interspersed with another book. You can check it out here:
